Blood Orange
Common Names: Blood Orange, Red Orange, or Raspberry Orange
Product Details
Description
Appearance: The blood orange is most famous for its flesh, which is crimson, near blood-colored, a deep ruby red, or sometimes streaked with red and orange. This color is due to the presence of anthocyanins, pigments that are common in flowers and berries but rare in citrus. The rind can also sometimes have a reddish blush or spots. Flavor Profile: It has a unique flavor that is generally sweeter than a regular orange, with a distinct, tart, and floral note often described as reminiscent of raspberry or strawberry. Varieties: The three most common varieties are: Moro: The most colorful with the deepest red/near-black flesh, and a strong flavor with a hint of raspberry. Tarico: Considered the sweetest and most popular table orange in Italy (a "half-blood" as its red pigmentation is less accentuated than the Moro). Sanguinely: Native to Spain, with reddish skin and sweet, tender flesh that is streaked with blood-colored lines.
