Description

--- The **fox grape** (*Vitis labrusca*) is a robust species of grapevine native to eastern North America. It is the genetic source of many popular American grape cultivars, most notably the **Concord grape**, as well as Catawba, Niagara, and Delaware. **Description and Key Characteristics:** * **"Foxy" Flavour/Aroma:** The most distinguishing characteristic is its prominent, unique flavour and scent, often described as "foxy" or having an earthy, sweet muskiness. This aroma is caused by the compound methyl anthranilate. * **"Slip-Skin" Berries:** When the ripe berries are gently squeezed, the thick skin easily separates and "slips" off the juicy pulp, a trait that sets it apart from the European wine grape (*Vitis vinifera*). * **Vine Structure:** Unlike other wild *Vitis* species, the Fox Grape commonly produces a tendril (or flowers/fruit) opposite **every** leaf node, which helps it climb vigorously. The underside of its large leaves is often covered with dense, woolly brown-grey hairs. **Uses:** Due to its strong "foxy" flavour, *Vitis labrusca* and its cultivars are primarily used in: * **Juice and Jelly:** The Concord grape is famously used for grape juice and grape jelly. * **Table Grapes:** Many varieties are enjoyed as fresh, edible table grapes. * **Wine:** They are used to make sweet and kosher wines, but the characteristic flavour often limits their use in dry table wines.
