Abiu: The Caramel Custard Fruit
Product Details
Description
Abiu (Pouteria caimito) is a tropical fruit native to the Amazonian region of South America. It is considered one of the best-tasting fruits in the Sapotaceae family, which also includes sapodilla and canistel. Appearance: The fruit is typically ovoid to round, often featuring a slight point or "nipple" at the apex. When fully ripe, the skin is smooth, thin, and a distinctive bright yellow color. Flesh: The interior pulp is translucent white to pale yellow, with a texture described as creamy, jelly-like, or resembling a firm custard. It contains one to five easily removable brown seeds. Taste: The flavor is mildly sweet and delicate, often compared to caramel custard or vanilla, with some varieties having a hint of pineapple. Ripeness & Latex: Unripe fruit contains a noticeable, gummy white latex that can make the mouth pucker. This sticky substance mostly disappears as the fruit fully ripens, which is why it is best eaten when it has turned completely yellow and is slightly soft. Common Names The Abiu is also known by several other names, including: Yellow Star Apple
