Aronia
Aronia Berries: The Black Chokeberry Superfruit
Product Details
Description
Aronia is a genus of deciduous shrubs native to eastern North America, most commonly known by the popular species Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa). The plant is characterized by: The Berries: Small, dark-purple to black, round fruits (technically pomes) that grow in clusters. They are highly valued for having one of the highest antioxidant levels among all fruits, particularly high concentrations of anthocyanins (the pigment responsible for their dark color). The Taste: Aronia berries have a distinctively astringent (mouth-drying) and tart flavor, which is why their common nickname is "Chokeberry." They are often processed into juices, jams, or powders rather than eaten raw, although the taste mellows slightly after a frost.
